Score Predictor: How to Keep Supporters Engaged All Season for Free

A guide to running a score prediction game for your club's supporters — how it works, how to set it up, and why it's one of the best free engagement tools available.

Keeping supporters engaged between matches is one of the hardest challenges for a grassroots club. A score predictor gives them something to do every single gameweek — and keeps them coming back to your club's page to check the leaderboard.

Unlike Last Man Standing, a score predictor doesn't require an entry fee. It's pure engagement. Think of it as a reason for your supporters to visit your club page every week — and while they're there, they might buy a lottery ticket, donate, or share your page with someone else.

How the scoring works

  • Exact score (e.g. you predict 2-1 and it finishes 2-1): 3 points
  • Correct result (e.g. you predict a home win and the home team wins, but by a different score): 1 point
  • Wrong result: 0 points

This scoring system — borrowed from the classic pools format — rewards accuracy without making it feel impossible. Correct results are common enough to keep people in the game all season, while exact scores are rare enough to create genuine moments of excitement.

Setting it up

  • Go to Score Predictor in your dashboard and create a new predictor
  • Pick a football competition — Premier League, Championship, FA Cup, Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A, or Ligue 1
  • Fixtures are imported automatically from the football data API — no manual entry
  • Share your club's public predictor page with supporters
  • Supporters enter their predicted scores before each gameweek
  • After matches, enter the results in your dashboard — points are calculated automatically

Tip: pair it with your WhatsApp group

Drop the predictor link in your supporters' WhatsApp group at the start of each gameweek. The banter about who got the highest score — and who predicted a 4-0 for Burnley at the Etihad — is exactly the kind of engagement that builds club community.

The leaderboard effect

The live leaderboard is one of the most powerful features of the score predictor. Supporters can check it at any time to see their ranking — and they will. A tight leaderboard heading into the final gameweeks of the season creates genuine excitement.

You can make the competition more compelling by offering a small prize for the season winner — a club shirt, a free lottery entry for the year, or a meal voucher from a local sponsor. Even a token prize dramatically increases engagement.

Why it helps with supporter retention

One of the main reasons supporters stop playing a club lottery is that it feels passive — they're just paying and hoping. A score predictor gives them an active reason to stay connected with your club throughout the season.

Clubs that run a score predictor alongside their lottery report noticeably lower churn in their lottery entries. Supporters who are actively engaged with the predictor are significantly less likely to cancel their recurring lottery entry.
